P2B: embracing the state of CONGESTION

My second attempt at "embracing congestion" was to build into (above and below) the Gardiner.

First I had to go back to really breaking down the meaning of the word "congestion"

What is congestion? A few definitions of the word as a noun;

  1. Can be defined as the state of being OVERCROWDED
  2. OVERLOADED/CLOGGED/BLOCKED
  3. Medically can be as a result of EXCESS ACCUMULATION that manifests as a sensation or change in bodily functions, becoming a symptom of something (a particular disease)

Within a city there are instances that warrant a “congested fabric” due to the fast paced nature of things. In this regard, one can miss the experience and engagement with built form and architecture, creating a disconnect.

ABSTRACT

ISSUE
The occurrence of congestion is inevitable, as it occurs within any fast growing megalopolitan city in the world, caused by ANTHROPOGENIC instances happening at similar moments, overlapping at different scales.

Cause & Effect
These human activities are inherently routine based, so by identifying and HIGHLIGHTING three CRITERION OF MEASUREMENT FOR THE STATE OF CONGESTION; such as the scale, speed and volume of stated participants within a congested context, moments of concentrated spots will begin to emerge, creating a wasted/idle time-effect occurring at that instance.

POSITION/THESIS
By embracing congestion, acknowledging the necessity for human activity and their routines is to be adhered and applied into the implementation of new design, by introducing conducive architectural elements injected into the megalopolis.

INTERVENTION
Identifying those moments where congestion occurs, I’ll begin to map out the flow levels created by the three different scales of movement previously identified. At these instances, a FORCED/CAPTURED audience exist at static moments within the path taken to accomplish their activities. Once these moments are identified, the building will begin to engage the audience, without distracting, but by capturing their attention for that static instant, providing a brief but captivating experience, acting as productive substitute for the that time wasted.

I will be designing a gallery that is built into and around these moments without interrupting existing infrastructural conditions, but rather will engage the ‘captured audience” as it acts as a tool for indirect interaction, communication and engagement with art and building as a moment of art.
